Because it’s a full hospital, you can count on them for emergency care, which makes a difference if you’ve been in an accident.
What stands out to me is their trauma and acute care. Surgeons like Dr Ram Anantha focus on complex hernia surgeries and abdominal wall reconstructions, which shows the depth of expertise here.

The University of Alberta Hospital was founded in 1906, and it has grown into one of the most advanced hospitals in Western Canada. It’s especially known for having one of the largest transplant programs in the province, handling liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants.
They have 63 surgeon-scientists who cover a wide range of procedures, including trauma, cancer, and bariatric surgery. One of the names that stands out is Dr Nori Bradley, who is part of the Canadian Collaborative of Urgent Care Surgery.
What also impresses me is they’ve invested in robot-assisted surgery, which makes a difference for precision and recovery. That’s why I’m not surprised that UAH has become a major referral centre for complex cases across Western Canada.
Sadly, wait times are often long, and cleanliness has been flagged as an issue, especially with the heavy patient load.

I can say that our experience was a good one
“Great care and attentive service from all the staff we met. I brought my father in for day surgery, reduction of the prostate and kidney stone break up. He will stay overnight to make sure his urine is clear. He came out of surgery into the urology unit 3E3. The nurses and support staff were friendly and courteous. I can say that our experience was a good one. It’s not like you want to be in the hospital as a patient but if you were this place takes care of you. Of course this is the same place as Walter C Mackenzie hospital. Overall this is a good place to get around in. There are several places to buy food and gift shops, ATM machines.”

I ended up at Grey Nuns Community Hospital for my appendectomy, and it was a mix of good and not so good. Dr Karim Alibhai, a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Canada, was the one who looked after me.
The pain was too much for me to choose where to go, but I’m glad I landed here. They follow Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) principles like fluid management and multimodal analgesia, which helped me bounce back quickly.
Later, I learned they also perform advanced procedures such as HIPEC for abdominal cancers and laparoscopic bowel surgeries, showing they keep up with modern practices.
They have a spiritual care team available, too, who can offer support even if you’re not religious.
The downside of my stay was noticing cleanliness issues in my ward. I also heard from other patients that elective surgeries sometimes get rescheduled at the last minute.

Weiss Clinics is a decent option if you want surgery done outside the hospital system. It’s a modern centre in Windermere that makes things easier by handling referrals and procedures in one place.
I found that really practical because you don’t have to bounce around different sites just to get care. It’s good too that out-of-province patients can book procedures here, and they’ve added virtual consultations, which save you the trip across town.
As for treatments, they focus on elective surgeries like hernia repairs, knee and shoulder work, and smaller orthopedic fixes. They also offer Rezūm therapy, which is a less invasive option for men dealing with prostate issues.
However, please note that they don’t take on complex cases, everything is elective, and I’ve heard of last-minute cancellations that can throw off plans.

Surgicorp is another clinic I’d point to if you’re looking at elective surgeries. They’ve been part of the healthcare scene for more than 30 years and are tied into the Edmonton Zone FAST program, which helps speed up referrals so you’re not waiting forever to see a specialist.
What I find notable is the variety of subspecialty surgeons working here. You’ve got people like Dr Curtis Ciona, who focuses on colorectal surgery, and Dr Jordan Nostedt, who handles hernia treatments.
They’ve also moved with the times by offering virtual consultations and follow-ups, which is a big plus if you’d rather avoid driving across the city for every appointment.
The downsides are clear, though. They don’t deal with emergencies, and they don’t let patients self-refer, so you’ll need to go through your family doctor first before they can help you.
