5 Best Optometrists in Edmonton to Keep You Seeing Clearly

Diagnostic technology: We favoured clinics with modern imaging and testing tools. Better tech can help catch eye problems before they become bigger headaches.

Specialized care: We looked beyond basic prescription checks. Extra expertise in kids’ eye care and specialty contacts earned points.

Patient convenience: Eye care shouldn’t feel like a scheduling puzzle. We considered clinic hours, urgent appointments, and on-site services.

Ocular disease management: We checked whether optometrists can monitor longer-term issues like glaucoma and cataracts. That matters when your eyes need more than a yearly checkup.

I’m a regular at Edmonton cinemas, but lately I’ve been squinting at the screen more than enjoying the plot. When subtitles start looking like tiny smudges, it’s probably time to get your eyes checked.

That sent me looking for the best optometrist in Edmonton for everything from updated prescriptions to proper eye-health assessments. I focused on clinics offering thorough exams, modern diagnostics, and care that doesn’t feel rushed.

Good vision care should help with more than just reading the eye chart. These Edmonton picks cover routine checkups, family eye care, and more complex concerns so movie night can go back to being about the film.

How much does it cost to see an optometrist in Edmonton?

A standard adult eye exam in Edmonton usually costs about $140. Most clinics charge between $90 and $170.

Adults aged 19 to 64 generally pay out of pocket unless they have private insurance. Children 18 and under and seniors 65 and older may have eligible exams covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan.

Medically necessary eye exams can also be covered under the provincial plan. Contact lens fittings usually cost an extra $30 to $100.

Address: Suite 100, 9145 82 Ave

Contact: (780) 468-3390 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday, 8 AM – 6 PM | Tuesday-Thursday, 8 AM – 7 PM | Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM | Saturday, 10 AM – 3 PM

Millcreek Optometry Centre feels like the kind of place that takes the guesswork out of eye care. They use Optical Coherence Tomography, corneal pachymetry, and digital retinal imaging to spot changes early.

A friend brings their kids here, and Dr. Champion apparently has a knack for turning eye tests into something less intimidating. Dr. Jimmy Prince also focuses on developing eyes, including high astigmatism and myopia management.

Adults aren’t left squinting in the dark either. The clinic screens for glaucoma and cataracts, offers digital eye strain advice, and fits specialty contacts for presbyopia and astigmatism.

The main drawback is weekend flexibility. Saturday doctor availability is limited, with Dr. Jimmy currently the only optometrist listing Saturday hours.

Pros

  • Modern diagnostic and retinal imaging technology
  • Strong focus on children’s eye care
  • Myopia management and high-astigmatism care
  • Glaucoma and cataract screening
  • Specialty contact lens fittings

Cons

  • Limited Saturday optometrist availability
  • Closed on Sundays

Knowledgeable and Personable Optometrist

Address: 2065 111 St NW

Contact: 780-434-5333 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday, 9 AM – 5 PM | Tuesday, 10 AM – 6 PM | Wednesday, 9 AM – 5 PM | Thursday, noon – 8 PM | Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM | Saturday, 9 AM – 4 PM

Heritage Vision Care has been looking after Edmonton eyes since 2002, so they’ve had plenty of time to get the hang of things.

I like that they leave room for same-day emergencies and squeeze in walk-ins when the schedule allows.

Dr. Hafsa Nasser brings pediatric research and myopia-management experience to younger patients. Dr. Balraj Kullar adds more than 20 years of clinical experience, including glaucoma, retinal, and neuro-related eye care.

They’re also equipped for trickier contact lens needs. That includes rigid gas-permeable and scleral lenses for irregular corneas and other complex cases.

The main drawback is the uneven weekday schedule. Tuesday starts at 10 AM, while Thursday doesn’t open until noon, so early appointments aren’t always easy to snag.

Pros

  • Serving Edmonton families since 2002
  • Same-day emergency appointments available
  • Walk-ins accepted when scheduling allows
  • Strong pediatric and myopia-management expertise
  • Specialty rigid gas-permeable and scleral lenses

Cons

  • Later opening on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Thorough and Professional Eye Exams

Dr. Kullar has been my Optometrist for many, many years, and he is cordial, professional and a pleasure to see once a year. His eye exams are thorough, and he and his staff are friendly and courteous always.  I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a pleasant experience.

Patient and Knowledgeable Optometrist

Always a great place to visit; staff very friendly. My optometrist is a very great person and takes it  slow. Would recommend this place any time.Dr.Kullar is very patient when checking your eyes when performing test. He is also very well educated and smart and most importantly Friendly.

3. Village Eye Centre

Address: 12765 50 St NW

Contact: 780-473-3998

Hours: Monday, 9 AM – 5 PM | Tuesday, 8 AM – 7 PM | Wednesday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM

Village Eye Centre leans into a patient-focused approach, which is welcome if you’d rather not feel hustled through an eye exam. There’s room to ask questions and actually understand what all those test results mean.

Dr. Brennan Nelson brings training in neuro-ophthalmology and retinal care, while the clinic manages concerns like macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Sindy Tromposch also focuses on dry-eye care and scleral contact lenses.

They use tools like visual field analysis and pachymetry to keep tabs on long-term eye health. That gives the clinic a nice balance between routine vision care and more complex monitoring.

The catch is location-specific care. Neuro-optometric rehabilitation for concussions or brain injuries is handled through their Sherwood Park clinic instead.

Pros

  • Patient-focused approach
  • Training in neuro-ophthalmology and retinal care
  • Dry-eye treatment available
  • Scleral contact lens fittings
  • Visual field analysis and pachymetry

Cons

  • Neuro-optometric rehabilitation handled in Sherwood Park
  • Closed on weekends

Thorough Care and Helpful Explanations

The front end staff is always so cheerful and helpful!  I really like Dr. Evans as an optometrist!  He is very thorough and knowledgeable. Answers any questions you may have!  Been coming to Village Eye Center for many years!

Personal and Informative Eye Care

When you find an optometrist you love, you keep going back. Dr Nelson is fantastic! Always appreciate his willingness to explain what is going on, and still personally connect at each appointment. Can’t recommend Dr Nelson and his team enough!!

4. Varsity Optical

Address: 11170 82 Ave NW

Contact: [email protected] | +1-780-433-5500

Hours: Monday, 10 AM – 7 PM | Tuesday-Wednesday, 10 AM – 6 PM | Thursday, 10 AM – 7 PM | Friday, 10 AM – 6 PM | Saturday, 10 AM – 3 PM

Varsity Optical has plenty of Edmonton history behind it, starting with founder Paul Lorieau, the former Oilers anthem singer. More than 25 years later, the clinic still blends eye care with a strong optical focus.

Dr. Marc Kallal brings dry-eye research experience, while Dr. Jessica Lam trained in corneal disease and specialty contact lenses. Dr. Jeanette Trac focuses on myopia management and orthokeratology.

Dr. Samantha Sperber adds interests in pediatrics, vision and learning, and neuro-visual training.

I also like the in-house lab, which can turn around eligible single-vision glasses in about an hour.

The catch is that speedy service isn’t available for every prescription. It depends on eligible single-vision lenses being in stock, so more specialized orders may take longer.

Pros

  • More than 25 years of local experience
  • Strong dry-eye care background
  • Specialty contact lens expertise
  • Myopia management and orthokeratology available
  • In-house lab with one-hour service for eligible lenses

Cons

  • One-hour glasses service is limited to qualifying single-vision lenses (specialized prescriptions may require a longer turnaround)

Convenient In-House Optical Services

Great optometrist, all services are available in-house from getting an eye test, to choosing frames and the prescription lenses can be made on site. Depending on the type of lenses and frame you could walk in and out with a set of prescription spectacles within an hour. The staff cater to your needs and budget, there are a wide range of add ons such as polarised, transition, blue light protection, scratch resistant options at varying price options.

Attentive and Caring Vision Care

If you’re looking for the best people to help you with your vision needs then look no further, Varsity Optical is that place. The staff are all super polite, smart, and caring. Dr. Lim is truly the best optometrist I’ve been to. She understood my problem and went the extra length to make sure it was properly addressed. I have nothing but good things to say about Varsity Optical. Highly recommended!

5. OPT Clinic Inc.

Website

Address: 6104 104 St NW #104

Contact: 780-760-6600 | [email protected]

Hours: Tuesday, 10 AM – 7 PM | Wednesday, 10 AM – 4 PM | Thursday, 10 AM – 7 PM | Friday-Saturday, 10 AM – 4 PM

OPT Clinic keeps things nicely streamlined, with eye exams and optical services handled under one doctor-owned roof. That means fewer stops when you need both a prescription update and new frames.

Dr. Jillian Wong brings ocular-disease training that includes glaucoma and cataract care, plus she offers exams in English and French. Dr. Angeline Hong focuses on dry-eye care, myopia management, and specialty contact lenses.

The clinic also handles eye emergencies and uses retinal imaging to get a closer look at what’s happening behind the scenes. I like that mix of routine care and more detailed diagnostics.

The main limitation is Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery. They provide assessments and referrals, but the actual procedure is done elsewhere.

Pros

  • Doctor-owned and operated clinic
  • Optometry and optical services under one roof
  • Exams available in English and French
  • Dry-eye and myopia management
  • Specialty contact lens fittings
  • Emergency eye care and retinal imaging

Cons

  • LASIK surgery isn’t performed on-site/patients need a separate surgical provider for the procedure

Friendly and Informative Eye Exam

Best optometrist experience I’ve ever had! Dr. Wong was very friendly and informative. She explained everything clearly to me and answered my questions well. The folks at the front desk were also lovely and helped me through the pre-tests efficiently. All in all, I was very impressed with my experience and will be looking forward to my next appointment.

Clear Explanations and Excellent Care

Dr Jillian Wong was the best optometrist I’ve ever seen. Everyone at Opt was super friendly and accommodating. Dr Wong answered all my questions and explained everything to me clearly so I could understand my prescription and my eye health. I will definitely be recommending opt. to my friends in the area – and plan to send my husband, who is also long overdue for an eye exam, over soon!
