5 Best Ophthalmologists in Edmonton Worth Seeing

Training and credentials: We favoured ophthalmologists with verified fellowships or advanced training. When it comes to eyes, extra expertise certainly doesn’t hurt.

Treatment technology: We checked each clinic’s lasers and diagnostic equipment. Newer tools can mean more precise testing and treatment.

Scope of services: We looked for clinics handling everything from routine procedures to complex corneal care. More options can save you from being bounced between providers.

Surgical experience: We considered each surgeon’s documented procedure experience. A well-practised hand offers a little extra peace of mind.

Accessibility and scheduling: We reviewed clinic hours and surgery schedules. Convenient appointments make eye care much easier to fit around an Edmonton workweek.

I knew something was off when I kept grabbing the wrong books at the bookshops. Turns out, blaming tiny print only works for so long.

Vision problems can make everyday errands surprisingly tricky, especially when cataracts or more serious eye conditions enter the picture. That’s when finding a specialist you actually trust starts to matter.

So I looked into experienced doctors, modern treatment options, and strong patient care around the city. Here’s my guide to finding the best ophthalmologist in Edmonton for clearer answers and, hopefully, fewer bookstore mix-ups.

How much does it cost to see an ophthalmologist in Edmonton?

Medically necessary ophthalmology visits and surgeries are generally covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan, so eligible patients pay $0.

Routine eye exams without provincial coverage usually cost $90 to $170. Advanced tests, such as optical coherence tomography retinal imaging, may add $30 to $60.

Elective laser vision correction, including laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis and photorefractive keratectomy, typically costs $2,000 to $4,000+ total. Premium multifocal cataract lenses can reach $5,000 to $5,500 per eye.

1. Visionmax Eye Centre

Website

Address: Suite 102, 575 100 St. SW

Contact: (780) 452-4111  | Fax: (780) 452-4114

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 8 AM – 4 PM | Friday, 8 AM – 2 PM

Visionmax Eye Centre caught my eye for one big reason: choice. It offers a broad mix of vision-correction procedures, including Small Incision Lenticule Extraction and Implantable Collamer Lenses.

Dr. Daniel Senekal brings serious mileage to the table, with more than 50,000 procedures performed. His postgraduate ophthalmology training and refractive surgery background also make this feel like a clinic that knows its lane well.

I also like that his interest in laser correction comes from personal experience with the procedure himself. A colleague who went here appreciated how focused and tailored the treatment process felt.

The main drawback is scheduling, since Visionmax is closed on weekends. Friday hours also wrap up at 2 PM, which isn’t ideal if you’re squeezing appointments around a full Edmonton workweek.

Pros

  • Broad range of vision-correction procedures
  • Dr. Senekal has performed 50,000+ procedures
  • Strong focus on refractive eye surgery
  • Offers Small Incision Lenticule Extraction and Implantable Collamer Lenses
  • Personalized, treatment-focused approach

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Friday hours end early at 2 PM

Clear Lens Exchange With Dr. Senekal

I flew to Edmonton from Kelowna for a clear lens exchange with Ophthalmologist, Doctor Senekal. It all went very smoothly and I could read the fine prints without reading glasses within few days of the procedure. Doctor Senekal is very precise and professional. The facility is very modern and clean and the staff very friendly. I would highly recommend this procedure as it has changed my life for the better. Thank you Dr. Senekal!

Successful Corrective Eye Surgery

From start to finish, the experience was exceptional. The team was incredibly kind and reassuring, and I truly believe the surgery was a great success. I am amazed by the results and would highly recommend VisionMax to anyone considering corrective eye surgery. A heartfelt thank you to the fantastic team!

2. Alberta Retina Consultants

Website

Address: Suites 100, 200 & 400, 10924-107 Avenue

Contact: (780) 448-1801 | Fax: (780) 448-1809

Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Alberta Retina Consultants has been focused on retinal and vitreous care since 1998, so this is very much a specialist’s specialist. Its team of nine retina physicians gives patients access to a deep bench of expertise under one roof.

I also like that every doctor holds an academic appointment at the University of Alberta. Their involvement in active research keeps the practice closely connected to new developments in retinal care.

That kind of focus matters when you’re dealing with conditions like retinal tears, diabetic retinopathy, or macular degeneration. It feels reassuring knowing the clinic’s entire setup is built around complex retinal problems.

The less appealing part is parking, which costs $6 an hour behind the clinic. Free street parking may be available nearby, but finding a spot can be a bit of a gamble.

Pros

  • Nine retina specialists under one roof
  • Strong focus on retinal and vitreous conditions
  • All physicians hold University of Alberta academic appointments
  • Active involvement in retinal research
  • Serving Edmonton since 1998

Cons

  • Parking behind the clinic costs $6 per hour
  • Free nearby street parking may be limited

Emergency Retinal Surgery Saved My Sight

Dr. Ehmann and all his staff and associates saved my eyesight with emergency retinal eye surgery.  In a time of questionable provincial Medicare in Alberta due to lack of funding, I feel very fortunate that this clinic and the Royal Alexandra were there for me in a crisis.   Forever grateful to you all!!!

Same-Day Laser Treatment for Retinal Detachment

Was referred to Dr. Somani for a suspected old detachment (asymptomatic), which was confirmed and treated with laser the same day. I am so impressed by this entire team. Everything moved quickly and efficiently, and everyone was super kind and professional through every step. I was in and out in about 1 hr 15 min. Can’t comment on parking, as I took a cab. It’s a good idea to bring sunglasses for after, as it wouldn’t be uncommon to have your pupils dilated.

3. Visionary Eye Surgeons LASIK

Website

Address: 390, 10665 Jasper Ave

Contact: [email protected] | Office 780-424-2233 | Fax: 780-426-7219

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 8 AM – 4 PM | Friday, 8 AM – noon

Visionary Eye Surgeons LASIK stands out for pairing experienced surgeons with some serious eye-care tech. Its setup includes the WaveLight EX500 excimer laser and TECNIS Odyssey intraocular lenses for laser and cataract procedures.

The clinic’s three ophthalmologists have collectively performed more than 65,000 successful eye surgeries, according to the practice. That’s a reassuring amount of experience when someone’s working millimetres away from your vision.

I also like that patients have both laser- and lens-based options under one roof. Photorefractive keratectomy can even suit some people with thinner corneas who aren’t ideal candidates for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.

The catch is the schedule, since Friday hours end at noon and there are no weekend clinic hours listed. That’s not exactly friendly if you’re juggling appointments around a standard Edmonton workweek.

Pros

  • Three board-certified ophthalmologists
  • 65,000+ successful surgeries reported by the clinic
  • Offers both laser- and lens-based procedures
  • Uses WaveLight EX500 laser technology
  • Photorefractive keratectomy available for some patients with thin corneas

Cons

  • Friday hours end at noon
  • No weekend clinic hours

Clearer Vision After Ophthalmology Care

I found everyone very helpful, well-trained, and friendly. They are very knowledgeable and answered my many questions. They took their time explaining things to me because I was a bit nervous. I would suggest this ophthalmologist and clinic to anyone. I can see clearly now and the colours are bright and crisp. I didn’t realize how much I was missing! 🙏🏻♥️

20/20 Vision After Cataract Surgery

I was referred to Visionary Eye Surgeons to have my cataracts removed and they implanted lenses. My vision is now 20/20 and I don’t need glasses anymore! Dr Machuk is extremely skilled and did a fantastic job. All the staff are very knowledgeable and efficient, including the reception staff. The aftercare was amazing. I asked my son to have his Ophthalmologist refer him here. He is from out of town so they took that into consideration for the treatment plan.

4. Alberta Eye MD

alberta-eye-md-logo

Website

Address: 2731 Hewes Way NW Suite 103

Contact: Phone 780-450-3335 | Fax: 780-461-9430

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM – 4 PM | Saturday by appointment

Alberta Eye MD impressed me with how many eye specialties it brings under one roof. Dr. Kam Kassiri alone has more than 12 years of experience with Topography-Guided Custom Ablation Treatment and Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking for keratoconus.

Dr. Michael Dorey also brings dual fellowship training in Ocular Pathology and Glaucoma and Anterior Segment. A friend who came here for complex glaucoma care felt well supported by the team.

There’s solid cataract expertise too, with Dr. Rehan Riyaz serving as Cataract Lead for Alberta Health Services’ Edmonton Zone.

For me, that mix of specialists makes the clinic feel well equipped for more complicated cases.

The catch applies to patients choosing Dr. Sim Sandhu for cataract surgery. The procedure is done in Westlock, so you’ll need to factor in the drive from Edmonton.

Pros

  • Multi-specialty ophthalmology team
  • Strong expertise in keratoconus, glaucoma, and cataract care
  • Dr. Dorey has dual fellowship training
  • Dr. Riyaz serves as Cataract Lead for Alberta Health Services’ Edmonton Zone
  • Saturday appointments available

Cons

  • Dr. Sim Sandhu’s cataract surgeries are performed in Westlock

Long-Term Glaucoma Care With Dr. Abuswider

I have Glaucoma and only one eye left that has only peripheral sight.  This clinic is amazing with extremely caring and experienced ophthalmologists.  I have been so blessed with having Dr. Samir Abuswider as my ophthalmologist for many years now.  He has done everything to save my vision left in my good eye.  Plus he is such a good-hearted human being!  Thank you Dr. Kassiri for turning my care over to Dr. Abuswider so many years ago👍. Your all amazing wonderful doctors who really do care about your patients ❤️. Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!

Well-Managed Cataract Surgery With Dr. Dorey

Due to needed cataract surgery I was referred to Dr. Dorey at Alberta Eye MD. They were very courteous and professional. I felt well taken care of and well prepared for surgery. The follow ups were quick and efficient. I would definitely go back for the next eye. Thank you Alberta Eye MD.

5. Eye Q Premium Laser

Website

Address: Plaza 124 Suite 250, 10216 124 St

Contact: 780-429-2015 | Fax: 780-433-2247

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 AM – 4:30 PM

Eye Q Premium Laser stands out for using the SCHWIND AMARIS 750S excimer laser with iris registration and ocular wavefront imaging. In plain English, that means treatment planning can get impressively precise.

Dr. Joseph Leong-Sit and Dr. Dean Mah both bring cornea and external disease expertise to the clinic. They also teach as Assistant Clinical Professors of Ophthalmology at the University of Alberta, which adds another layer of credibility.

I also like that the clinic keeps its focus firmly on refractive eye surgery rather than trying to be everything at once. For patients weighing laser correction, that specialization can make the whole process feel more streamlined.

The catch is scheduling, since refractive surgeries are performed only on Thursdays with next-day reviews on Fridays. If Thursdays are packed for you, there isn’t much wiggle room.

Pros

  • Uses the SCHWIND AMARIS 750S excimer laser
  • Offers iris registration and ocular wavefront imaging
  • Two ophthalmologists with cornea and external disease expertise
  • Both surgeons teach at the University of Alberta
  • Strong focus on refractive eye surgery

Cons

  • Refractive surgeries are scheduled only on Thursdays
  • Next-day reviews take place on Fridays

20/20 Vision After ICL Surgery

I had my ICL procedure done by Dr Leong-sit. I’m not a candidate for LASIK. I was pretty nervous but had an amazing experience. To all the pre-op test to the day of, they take care of you. He answers all questions you have. Surgery went so smooth and I have 20-20 vision now. This was a life changing procedure and I couldn’t be more happy. Would recommend to anyone.

Improved Vision After Cataract Surgery

Dr. Nazarali completed a cataract  surgery for me and the experience was excellent from start to finish. The procedure was clearly explained, performed with great skill and went smoothly. My vision has improved significantly and I cannot be happier with the results. I highly recommend him for any one who is looking to do the same surgery.
