Watching Movies That Left Me Reel-ing at the Best Cinemas in Edmonton!

As much as I love the convenience that streaming services provide, watching movies in cinemas is an unparalleled experience. I mean, the big screen, the immersive surround sound, even the too-cold temperature that gets me shivering—such a core memory!

That’s why I’ve made it a habit to go to the cinema at least once or twice every month. Fortunately, there are a few cinemas in Edmonton that satisfy my cinephile cravings, and they’re pretty good—comfortable seats and a nice variety of films showing.

If you’re also a film enthusiast like me, here are the best local cinemas that you need to check out.

Landmark Cinemas

– From: landmarkcinemas

Address: 800 St Albert Trl, St. Albert

Distance from EDM: Around 25 minutes

Contact Number: +15878700679

Website

A popular cinema chain in Edmonton, Landmark Cinemas has quite a modern vibe, and the individual theatres are cozy and comfortable. The seats are wonderful; I can recline all the way, so it feels like I’m just lounging at home!

I love the food and drinks as well. The popcorn is always served fresh and has that rich, buttery taste that I quite like.

Drinks? You have many options! I personally love the ICEE beverage (yes, I know it’s really cold—I’m a psychopath like that), but they also have alcohol service. Imagine drinking wine while watching a trashy movie. Sounds like a fun time to me!

Pro Tip:

Landmark Cinemas has a special offering called Shout Out, in which you can have a personal video playing on the big screen. This is perfect for celebrations like birthdays, engagements, and anniversaries.

Cineplex Odeon Windermere Cinemas and VIP

Cineplex is another widely popular cinema chain with many locations in the city, but my go-to is the one at Currents of Windermere.

There are many things to love about this cinema. Firstly, I like that they have a VIP area. This area has a plush lounge where I can, well, lounge (and scroll on my phone) while waiting for my showing to start.

This cinema also has an arcade, where I can play games! In short, I’m never bored here, which is why I love coming back as much as possible.

Oh, and this place has self-serve fountain pop dispensers as well. Frankly, this is my favourite feature because I get one free refill on each large pop that I buy. I love free stuff!

Pro Tip:

You can book your own private event at one of the theatres. Do this for a private screening with friends or a birthday party!

Scotiabank Theatre Edmonton

– From: bestedmontonmall

Address: 8882 170 St NW #3030, West Edmonton Mall

Contact Number: +17804442400

Website

Technically, Scotiabank Theatre Edmonton is a Cineplex cinema, but I feel like it deserves its own spot on the list. Located within West Edmonton Mall, this cinema is quite quirky; it has various statues of iconic characters like Batman.

Also, for a cinema located inside a mall, it offers a good variety of film formats, such as Ultra AVX, IMAX, 4DX, Real D 3D, and D-Box. The snack variety is pretty good as well; the popcorn is salty and buttery, and the poutine is wonderfully cheesy.

The one downside to this cinema is that the prices are so expensive, especially when compared to others in the city. That’s the main reason why I don’t come here as often as I used to.

Pro Tip:

Since this is a Cineplex cinema, you can also book a private event here.

IMAX Theatre at Telus World of Science

– From: twosedm

Address: 11211 142 St NW, TELUS World of Science—Edmonton

Contact Number: +17804513344

Website

The TELUS World of Science is a tourist attraction best known for its hands-on exhibits on robots and other science-y stuff. But did you know that it has its own IMAX Theatre? Well, now you do, so you have to check it out ASAP!

A lot of the time, this cinema is showing educational films that don’t exceed the 45-minute runtime, but there are also blockbusters being shown here. Sometimes, the cinema even screens concerts, which is exciting.

The theatre itself is very clean, and the seats are comfortable. The sound is incredibly immersive, too. There are 12 speakers all around the theatre, and the sub-bass is boosted, so you can really feel the ground shake during climactic moments.

Pro Tips:

Don’t sit at any of the front row seats because you’ll end up craning and hurting your neck.

Sometimes, the cinema holds a sale of IMAX annual passes. Purchase one when you can!

Metro Cinema

– From: themetrocinema

Address: 8712 109 St NW

Contact Number: +17804259212

Website

Are you more of an indie film enthusiast? Then, Metro Cinema is the best place for you! This independent cinema is best known for screening films that you might not have heard of. They also have reruns of old classics, which are just as fun!

One reason I love this place is the vintage atmosphere; it makes me feel nostalgic. The staff is another reason, as everyone is passionate about films. They actually give me many amazing recommendations, and I appreciate that.

The snacks are reasonably priced as well. Oh, and kids aged 12 and under get free admission! Sometimes, I actually bring my kids here for some family bonding time.

Pro Tip:

If you’re a loyal patron, you might be interested in signing up for their membership program. As a member, you can enjoy perks like free entry and free snacks.

Leduc Cinemas

– From: leduccinemas

Address: 4702 50 St, Leduc

Distance from EDM: Around 35 minutes

Contact Number: +17809862728

Website

Leduc Cinemas is another great cinema for people who are interested in watching underrated films (though there are also blockbusters here). That said, this cinema is located in Leduc, just outside of Edmonton, which is only a short drive away.

In addition to the typical “Now Showing” lineup, this cinema also has a Mystery Movie Matinee Week. Personally, this is my favourite event because 1) it’s family-friendly, so I can bring my kids here, and 2) we don’t know the film until it starts, and I love that.

Since this cinema is pretty small, the queues are never long, and there’s rarely any big crowd. That’s a plus for me.

Pro Tip:

Book a private event here—be it a casual family movie night or an exciting birthday bash.
