The best personal trainers in Edmonton will help you reach your health goals!

  • Certification. We made sure that all the personal trainers have undergone intensive training in fitness and physical health from renowned institutions like the National Personal Training Institute and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). Although the fitness industry isn’t regulated in Edmonton or Alberta, we still prefer it if the personal trainers have obtained the Certified Fitness Trainer (CFT) certification from Fitness Alberta or the Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.
  • Experience. We’d also like it if the personal trainer has several years of experience under their belt. Still, we acknowledge that this isn’t the end-all-be-all, so if we hear from clients that a relatively new trainer is great, then we consider them too.
  • Training Style. Ideally, the trainer should tailor the plan based on the client’s needs. They should also be warm, patient, and encouraging. In addition to our experience, we also interviewed other clients about their own experience with the trainers.
  • Pricing. As much as possible, we want the rate to be between C$70 and C$90 per session. If the trainer offers packages, the pricing shouldn’t go above C$600 for eight sessions.

I admit: ever since the pandemic, I’ve been eating unhealthy junk and also stopped working out. This year’s health checkup was a wakeup call because it turns out I have high cholesterol and sugar.

But it’s not too late. I can change things for the better by sticking to a healthy diet and following a moderate exercise routine. For the latter point, I’ve tried working out on hiking trails, but I also decided to work out with a personal trainer—and so far, it’s been great!

Planning a lifestyle change, too? Here are some of the best personal trainers in Edmonton!

How much does a personal trainer cost in Edmonton?

Hiring a personal trainer in Edmonton usually costs around C$70 per session. Some trainers offer multi-session packages, and the rates fall between C$300 (for four sessions) and C$600 (for eight sessions).

Frederick Fitness comes highly recommended in my inner circle, which is why I ended up going with him. And I’m glad I did!

The first thing I like about these trainers is that they have a private studio. As someone who’s self-conscious, I like this setup very much. He even offers online coaching as well, which is perfect for shy and/or busy people.

I also really like how Justin, my personal trainer, operates. First, I had a free fitness assessment with him, followed by a consultation where I discussed my goals. He then created an intensive workout plan that best fit my objectives.

I appreciate that he makes sure to check in with me every time. He doesn’t even mind it if I complain about something; for example, the initial strength set we had was too hard for me, and when I told him that, he provided an alternative without a fuss.

He doesn’t just keep you accountable and safe; he’s also there to motivate you. Whenever I feel down, he reminds me of my progress so far, which inspires me to keep improving and maybe even go out of my comfort zone.

The only downside I see is that their prices are on the higher end—between C$85 and C$95 per one-hour session. Meanwhile, their online coaching ranges from C$199 to C$449 per month!

However, they do offer a 30-minute in-person session that starts at only C$45, which I think is a great alternative.

Pros

  • Has a private studio
  • Online coaching available
  • Free fitness assessment
  • Accommodating and motivational trainer
  • Offers 30-minute and 60-minute sessions

Cons

  • Slightly expensive rates

Cares about your progress

I’ve been training weekly with Justin for 4 months. He is by far the best trainer I’ve had in the last two years. We started off by doing a free fitness assessment and consultation where we talked about my goals. One of the things I appreciate most about Justin is that he actually listens to what I want to see in my training and checks in from time to time to make sure we’re on the same page. He is also always adapting my exercises as he learns what works for me and what doesn’t. Lastly, Justin isn’t lazy—he cares about your progress and getting your reps in, even if it takes a couple more minutes vs finishing right on time. 10/10.”

Always fun sessions

Justin is a very good personal trainer. I really enjoyed my sessions with him. Never was boring and made it fun and never seemed repetitive during my work outs. Each time I grew stronger and more movements. He is very knowledgeable in what he is doing with both fitness and health. I was a novice person when it comes to the gym let alone a proper work out. Was comfortable in his studio and the personal one-on-one with Justin.

What people like about F.R.E.E. Fitness is their array of personal trainers, with each having their own expertise. So, whether you want to get strong or improve your body composition, there’s a trainer here for you.

I also like that the gym has categorized its trainers based on difficulty. There are beginner-friendly trainers who can create relatively easy workout plans and premium coaches who are perfect for clients with lofty fitness goals.

Clients praised the trainers, telling me that they’re knowledgeable and supportive. Trainers also make sure that the workouts are challenging but fun.

Another thing that people like is the fact that you can book a group training session, which is perfect for people who want to work out with friends.

If you’re the opposite—that is, you’re extremely shy—you can book their online coaching services instead.

Not sure which setup works with you? You can schedule a free 15-minute consultation, and a trainer will help you weigh your options.

The prices here are reasonable; they range from C$30 to C$75 per session (depending on the trainer’s experience). That said, you do have to pay a membership fee to the gym as well, and this costs an extra C$65 or C$75 per month.

Pros

  • Impressive lineup of personal trainers
  • Trainers are categorized based on expertise and difficulty
  • Knowledgeable and supportive trainers
  • Group training and online coaching available
  • Free consultation
  • Reasonable prices

Cons

  • Additional monthly gym membership fee required

Kind and understanding

An amazing gym with multiple options for people with different fitness goals in mind (as well as trainers catering to different needs!) I especially loved that they have literal stones for stone lifting. My trainer Ari has taken good care of my needs and designed a program that made me realise potential that I never thought I could achieve. He’s a really kind and understanding person until you show him that you can deadlift 300 lbs and then it’s a different game of training to your limits.”

Knowledgeable and supportive trainer

FREE Fitness is hands down the most welcoming gym I’ve ever been to! The staff is friendly, the space is clean and well-equipped, and there’s a great community vibe. Tony, my personal trainer, has been incredible—knowledgeable, supportive, and always pushing me to be my best. He makes workouts challenging but fun, and I’ve seen real progress since training with him. If you’re looking for a gym where you’ll feel comfortable from day one and a trainer who truly cares, FREE Fitness and Tony are the way to go. Highly recommend!

Looking for a personal trainer in downtown Edmonton? Head to Evolve Strength Downtown, which is conveniently located near the River Valley Glenora.

What clients like about Evolve Strength is that they have different trainers for different goals (strength training, callisthenics, muscle building, weight loss, and Olympic lifting). There are even trainers who can help you with mobility issues and body positivity!

Because of this, the clientele is pretty varied—from older folks trying to improve their mobility to professional weightlifters and bodybuilders.

Clients also told me that the personal trainers are friendly and welcoming, which is good news since some clients are shy, self-conscious, and/or have gym-related anxiety.

Evolve Strength is also spacious and equipped with everything you need to exercise (weights and other specialized machines). Some clients told me that the space helps motivate them in their workouts!

However, one thing people don’t like is the fact that personal trainers are only available to gym members. Plus, if you’re already a member, you’ll still have to pay extra for some things (e.g., cancellation fee and delay fee).

Pros

  • Conveniently located
  • Different trainers with their own expertise
  • Varied clientele
  • Friendly and welcoming trainers
  • Spacious and well-equipped gym

Cons

  • Trainers only available to gym members
  • Extra fees for cancellation and delay

Friendly and kind trainers

This is the best gym I have ever been to – the staff and clientele are friendly, kind, and the whole atmosphere of the gym is so welcoming. They have tons of equipment to target anything you are looking for. The lockers are clean and well-maintained, the steam room is a wonderful addition, and their towel service is great too. If you are looking for a trainer, the trainers at Evolve are also top-notch, and you can tell that they are definitely on another level. Highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for one! Thank you to all the staff at Evolve!

Well-managed gym

Easily the best gym in the city! I’ve tried a few different ones, but will now never leave Evolve. Been training here a couple of years and I have nothing but great things to say – lots of professional equipment, ample space to work out, a track, racks, benches, you name it. I once off-hand mentioned a loose handle on one of the air bikes and Tyler got his tools to fix it right away! Really well managed. And if you’re looking for a trainer, the ones at Evolve are the absolute best.

If you want a comprehensive training program, you might like High Definition Fitness (HDF). Here, not only will the personal trainer come up with a rigorous workout program tailored especially for you, but they will also prepare a custom diet plan!

That’s why most of their clients here are people who want to lose weight for health reasons, but they’ve also served professional bodybuilders and other competitive athletes.

Another thing that clients like about HDF is the intimate atmosphere. You’ll be the only one in the private gym during your designated time, so your trainer’s attention is all on you. Plus, you don’t have to be self-conscious about strangers anymore.

The private gym also features a wide range of equipment, such as treadmills, ellipticals, TRX Rower, and kettlebells. They even have a Pendulum Squat and Mag Grips, which are hard to find in Edmonton!

That said, HDF can be expensive. A single 60-minute session costs you C$95, while multi-session packages range from C$450 (five sessions) to C$3,500 (50 sessions).

Additionally, I wish they offered online coaching for people who can’t find the time to go to the gym or who’d rather exercise at home.

Pros

  • Comprehensive training program (including meal plan)
  • Diverse clientele
  • Intimate atmosphere
  • Well-equipped private gym

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Doesn’t have online coaching

Respectful of one another

Best Atmosphere, Best Owners and Best Members. Everyone pushes one another to be their best and is respectful of one another. The warm smiles and encouragement of everyone makes it feel like home and one of the best gyms anywhere for sure! Definitely feels like family. Got to explore and find limits for my growth and progression and that met my needs/goals. Helen is the best! Would recommend anyone for nutrition/training to go to her or Daphne 100%.

Personable and knowledgeable trainers

What an excellent facility and team. The knowledge and the help that Helen and Daph offer are beyond exceptional. They treat everyone with the same interest and support to reach their goal. If you are looking for a place that is knowledgeable and also the people are personable, this is the place to be.”

The Barbell Base is where you should go if your personal goal is to become stronger. After all, the personal trainers at this gym specialize in strength training.

Clients told me that the main reason they love this gym is that the classes are always different, so they never get bored. Because of this, it’s so easy to have fun during a session.

I also like that you have the option to book a private or group training session. Most clients prefer the private sessions, but the group ones are also pretty exciting. Everyone cheers each other on.

The trainers are wonderful, too. One client told me that she was worried because she was a beginner who was intimidated by weights, but her trainer made her feel welcome. He even made sure to provide a detailed explanation of every workout.

One downside to this gym is that the trainers only do strength training. If you want cardio or weight loss, you’re better off somewhere else.

I also don’t like that they don’t have their prices available on the website. You need to contact them before they give you the details, which is inconvenient.

Pros

  • Fun classes
  • Private and group training sessions available
  • Accommodating trainers
  • Wonderful community

Cons

  • Only offers strength training
  • No prices on the website

Fun and manageable workouts

This is the first gym where I’ve actually been able to stick to a routine – and enjoy it! The small group training is super effective, the workouts are fun and manageable, and the trainers are amazing. They’re always watching to make sure your form is right and you’re staying safe. I get a complete workout in a hour and I leave feeling great every time. Highly recommend if you’ve ever struggled with motivation or felt lost in a traditional gym! Plus, everyone is super welcoming and friendly.

Never boring

I love Barbell Base! The coaches are awesome, super friendly and always make you feel welcome. Every class is different, so it never gets boring. I’ve always been more of a cardio girl, but now I’m actually enjoying lifting weights (which I never thought I’d say!). Such a great vibe and community, everyone cheers each other on. Honestly, it’s the one gym I actually look forward to going to.”
