Stride strong again with the best ankle doctors in Edmonton

  • Credentials and training - We looked for ankle doctors with recognized medical degrees, certifications from the College of Podiatric Physicians of Alberta, and at least three years of experience treating sprains, fractures, and chronic ankle issues.
  • Ankle care specialization - We assessed whether these doctors are highly knowledgeable in treating various ankle and foot conditions, including sports injuries, rehabilitation, and preventive care.
  • Clinic accessibility - We checked if their clinics are located in convenient parts of Edmonton, with flexible hours and options for urgent appointments that make it easier to get care quickly.
  • Patient experience - We looked at how approachable and supportive the doctors are, whether they explain treatment plans clearly, and how comfortable and welcoming the clinic environment feels.
  • Cost and coverage - We evaluated whether pricing is fair given the level of expertise, the quality of treatment, and whether Alberta Health Care or private insurance can help offset their costs for consultations, braces, or orthotics.

It was just my luck that while I was on my way to work, I twisted my ankle. I thought it would ease up after a long day, but even with painkillers, the ache still stuck around, and it made it tough to sleep.

I decided not to risk it and went straight to an ankle doctor. It turns out it was a serious sprain, and I needed a brace to keep it from getting worse.

But to be honest, I was just glad I got proper treatment quickly. Since finding the right help made all the difference, I put together a list of the best ankle doctors in Edmonton so you can get care without the stress.

How much does it cost to see an ankle doctor in Edmonton?

In Edmonton, a routine visit to an ankle doctor typically costs around $80. Alberta Health Care offers only partial coverage, so you’ll mostly have to pay out of pocket unless you have extended health insurance.

The clinic I went to for my ankle sprain was the Foot and Ankle Wellness Centre. One of the main reasons I chose it is that it’s run by Dr Sheharyar Chaudhry, who has more than 20 years of experience.

I found it convenient that they have digital X-ray equipment right in the clinic, so they were able to quickly figure out what was wrong. Since my issue was a sprained ankle, it also helped that they provided custom ankle braces, which gave me a snug fit and extra support.

While Dr Chaudhry was examining my ankle, I learned that they offer minimally invasive surgeries right in the clinic. That’s useful because it removes the need to book an appointment at a hospital.

However, I did remember having to wait a couple of minutes past my appointment. They’re also one of the pricier options you’ll find in Edmonton.

Pros

  • Lead ankle doctor has more than 20 years of experience
  • On-site digital X-ray for quick diagnosis
  • Minimally invasive surgery options, such as neuroma and bunion treatment
  • Custom ankle braces for tailored support
  • Direct billing to insurance providers

Cons

  • Occasional wait times beyond scheduled appointments
  • Above-average prices

Went above and beyond to assess, diagnose and create a treatment plan

“Very pleased with my initial appointment! All of the staff were extremely helpful and Dr. Chaudhry went above and beyond to assess, diagnose and create a treatment plan for my foot pain. Would recommend this clinic to anyone experiencing foot or ankle pain.”

Gibbs Foot & Ankle Clinic has been around for more than 25 years, which is quite impressive. They cover a lot of ground, including custom orthotics, ingrown toenail fixes, and arch pain relief.

But what really caught my attention is their focus on diabetic foot care, which is huge for preventing ulcers and infections. I also found their therapeutic laser treatment interesting, since it helps with ankle inflammation and arch pain without surgery.

It’s also worth noting that they can help with arthritis, a condition that often affects the ankles and can be tough to manage.

That said, it’s disappointing that they sometimes fail to respond to enquiries. I also find their operating hours to be a bit confusing, which makes booking an appointment more frustrating than it should be.

Pros

  • More than 25 years of experience
  • Strong focus on diabetic foot care
  • Therapeutic laser treatment for ankle pain and inflammation
  • Custom orthotics for arch and ankle support
  • Can help in managing arthritis

Cons

  • Sometimes fails to respond to enquiries
  • Inconsistent operating hours

Doctor Gibbs is an amazing doctor!

“Doctor Gibbs is an amazing doctor! I came in with pain in my feet, not knowing what was wrong. Doctor Gibbs was able to diagnose my symptoms and made me a pair of insoles. Now when I am at work landscaping I have no pain! I would highly recommend Dr. Gibbs”

Strathcona Foot and Ankle Clinic was founded in 2006 and focuses on treating a variety of ankle problems, especially sports injuries.

The clinic is run by two experienced podiatrists, including Dr Artur Kruszelnicki, who speaks Polish and provides important support for Edmonton’s Polish community.

From what I gathered, they handle sprains, strains, contusions, and other common problems. They also provide care for rheumatoid arthritis, using a mix of orthotic therapy, special footwear, and steroid injections to help patients manage pain.

It’s a good thing that you don’t need a referral from a GP, so booking an appointment here is straightforward.

On the flip side, the clinic is small and only takes a limited number of patients each day. They also don’t have a proper online booking system, meaning you need to email or leave your details and wait for a reply.

Pros

  • 20 years of experience
  • Strong focus on sports medicine
  • Has treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and chronic foot conditions
  • Has a Polish-speaking podiatrist
  • No GP referral required

Cons

  • Can only accept very few patients every day
  • Lacks a proper online booking system

I had such a great experience at this clinic

“I had such a great experience at this clinic. The staff are compassionate, knowledgeable, and thorough. I felt completely comfortable throughout my visit, and the results speak for themselves. I highly recommend this practice (especially Dr. K!), to anyone seeking top-quality foot care.”

Couldn’t have asked for a better and smoother experience

“A rather small clinic, but a great one nonetheless! I’ve never had a procedure go more smoothly than the one I had with Dr. Kruszelnicki (Dr. K for short). He was patient, reassuring, and took his time to complete the procedure. Qualities such as these don’t go unnoticed in this type of profession. Couldn’t have asked for a better and smoother experience. Thanks Dr.K!”

If accessibility is important to you, The Foot Institute is worth a look. They have close to 30 years of experience and run seven clinics across Edmonton, which makes getting to them fairly convenient.

What I find notable is the variety of advanced treatments they provide for foot and ankle issues. Prolotherapy injections are one option, using glucose to help damaged ligaments heal.

They also offer HyProCure, a procedure that stabilizes misaligned feet with a small titanium stent near the ankle bone. Furthermore, K-Laser therapy is available to speed up recovery from ligament injuries and ankle sprains.

It’s not perfect, though. I’ve heard that some of their podiatrists show up late to appointments, and a few people have mentioned rude behaviour from staff.

Pros

  • 7 locations across Edmonton
  • Nearly 30 years of experience
  • Prolotherapy to heal damaged ligaments
  • Offers HyProCure to treat misaligned feet
  • Can do K-Laser therapy for faster healing

Cons

  • Some rude staff
  • Occasional wait times beyond scheduled appointments

I no longer have to worry about pain

“I’ve had two procedures with Doctor Smith now, and they’ve both turned out amazing! She was very kind and was able to answer all my questions, and I no longer have to worry about pain I was dealing with on the daily”

-Hope Assen, Google Reviews

These docs know what they are doing

“I have been coming here for years. These docs know what they are doing. I usually see Dr. Young but you are in good hands(or feet) with any of their knowledgeable staff.”

One of the oldest clinics I came across that focuses on foot and ankle care is Associated Foot Clinic. Founded in 1971, they have five podiatric physicians on staff, which lets patients benefit from a range of expertise rather than just one perspective.

Their team is well regarded, with Dr Richard Bochinski standing out as a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Treatment options cover corrective ankle surgery, custom orthotics, and bunion care. It’s also worth mentioning that they provide superpulsed laser therapy, which can help with pain relief and healing.

Another strength is their attention to children who suffer from overuse injuries from sports, something that can have lasting effects if not addressed early.

Sadly, they see a high number of patients, so appointments may take time to secure. They also don’t direct bill insurance, leaving that responsibility to patients.

Pros

  • More than 50 years of experience
  • Team of 5 podiatric physicians
  • A podiatrist is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons
  • Corrective ankle surgery available
  • Superpulsed laser therapy for pain relief
  • Can treat overuse injuries in children

Cons

  • Tends to get fully booked quickly
  • No direct billing to insurance companies

I walked out of the clinic pain-free!

“In considerable pain in my left foot I was lucky to see Dr. Enrico who within 35 minutes was able to fix my problem and I walked out of the clinic pain-free! Great Doctor and I highly recommend him and the staff at the clinic. THANK YOU ALL”

They knew exactly what my issue was the first time I came in

“I’ve had an issue with both my feet for some time now, I tried finding answers at many different places and came up empty-handed until I tried here and they knew exactly what my issue was the first time I came in. They are very accommodating to my needs and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is struggling to find answers.”
