My son was getting bored after school, and I knew he needed something fun to look forward to. He’s always loved music and spends time tinkering with our old piano, so I figured it was time to help him learn properly.

I signed him up for piano lessons with a great teacher, and just a few sessions later, he’s already playing beginner tunes and can’t wait to get home for his lessons.

Seeing how much it’s helped him, I wanted to share the best piano teachers in Edmonton for anyone starting out. And if you love singing too, check out our list of the best singing lessons in Edmonton (Singing Lesson Edmonton).

How much do piano lessons cost in Edmonton?

In Edmonton, piano lessons usually cost around $35 for a 30-minute session and around $60 for a full hour. Prices can vary depending on your teacher’s experience, the type of lesson, and your skill level.

Classic Studios in Sherwood Park has a pretty solid reputation among families looking for piano lessons that don’t feel too formal. They’ve been around for years and keep things simple, which I like.

You can choose regular private lessons or go for their accelerated piano program called Giant Steps, which is great for kids who learn better in a group setting. It mixes creativity and teamwork, so practice doesn’t feel like a chore.

They don’t lock you into long contracts, which is refreshing, and if your child isn’t happy after the first lesson, they’ll refund you. That kind of guarantee says a lot about their confidence in what they offer.

The only downsides are location and reach. They’re on the eastern edge of Edmonton, so getting there can be a bit of a drive, and their in-home lessons only cover Sherwood Park within about five kilometres.

Pros

  • Accelerated piano program for faster progress
  • Offers both private and group piano lessons
  • No long-term contracts
  • In-home lessons available
  • Money-back guarantee

Cons

  • Located on the eastern edge of Edmonton
  • Mobile lessons limited to Sherwood Park within about 5 km

My daughter loves her music lessons

“Classic Studios is a wonderful collection of music teachers that offer music lessons for all ages and abilities. They have an inclusive environment and even offer monthly masterclasses (included in the cost of lessons) where students can come together and practice playing in front of one another. My daughter is 5 and learning to play the piano and her teacher Charlotte is fantastic. She is patient and knowledgeable and keeps the lessons fun and engaging. My daughter loves her music lessons and the masterclasses!”

My daughters’ love for music grew substantially

“Dann Ria is my daughters’ first music instructor. We feel so blessed to know her since she is very encouraging, patient and guided my daughter through her interest in piano. Yes, there are so many free video tutorials out there, but having Dann Ria, who is a professional and music is her craft—I am pretty sure my daughter will inherit the same passion. My daughters’ love for music grew substantially. I love it that she always looks forward to her piano lessons every weekend.”

YaMusic is run by Yamaha-trained instructors who focus on structured teaching to give students a clear path to follow. Their credentials already impressed me, but what stood out more was how flexible they are with piano lessons.

They offer free demo classes so people can see their teaching style and decide if it fits. The Trial Package is a good starting point with four short lessons at a discounted price, perfect if you just want to test the waters.

For those who prefer a less structured approach, their Flex Package lets you learn at your own pace while the teacher steps in only when needed.

I also liked the Young Musicians Course, which gives kids a group setting to build piano basics while learning general musical skills.

Sadly, their hours can be inconsistent, and them being on the southern edge of Edmonton isn’t ideal for everyone.

  • Yamaha-trained instructors

  • Trial Package with 4 short lessons at a discounted rate
  • Flex Package allows self-paced learning and relaxed scheduling

Windermere Music Academy runs out of two Edmonton locations, Windermere and Laurier Heights, so getting there isn’t much of a hassle. From what I’ve seen, they’re a good choice for young learners and anyone serious about learning the piano.

Their Music for Young Children program is a great starting point for kids. It blends play with structure, keeping lessons fun while still teaching proper technique.

For those aiming for credentials, they also prepare students for Royal Conservatory of Music exams, which adds a nice level of formality to their training.

Adults can join in too through their Adult Piano Package, which is tailored for beginners or those picking it up again. It’s good that they offer a free class so you can try things out before committing.

The only issues I’ve noticed are inconsistent operating hours and a wait list because demand is high.

Phil is the one currently teaching my son piano after school, and so far he’s been a great fit. He’s been teaching since 2014, which gave me confidence that he really knows how to guide his students.

When I looked him up, I found that he uses curriculums like Faber and Faber, Bastien, and Alfred’s Piano Basics. I don’t know much about piano methods, so it helped that he offered a trial lesson to see if his style suited my son.

It did. Phil’s mix of different curriculums keeps the lessons interesting and helps my son stay engaged every session.

I also appreciate that he comes to our home for lessons. It saves us the drive and keeps my son comfortable in his own space.

However, he charges $63 for an hour, and his 30-day cancellation policy can feel a bit strict for busy families.

Pros

  • Over 10 years of teaching experience
  • Uses Faber and Faber, Bastien, and Alfred’s Piano Basics
  • Offers first trial lesson for new students
  • In-home lessons available for convenience
  •

Cons

PROS

A fantastic teacher

“Phil has been teaching our oldest child (8 years old) piano for about two years, and our second (5 years old) for a few months. They have both come incredibly far in their skills, but more importantly they are SO excited to practice and to see Mr. Phil every week. He is a fantastic teacher and makes the kids feel so welcome and supported. He has also been beyond accommodating to our schedule whenever possible. The kids have quickly developed a very thorough understanding of foundational skills and theory, and a love for music, thanks to Mr. Phil’s engaging teaching style. Highly recommend!!”

Phil is an excellent teacher and relates so well with his students

“Mr Phil has taught 2 of our granddaughters for two years. We are so pleased that we have added our grandson as well for this year. Phil‘s greatest attributes include his genuine interest, concern and respect for each of his students in their musical development and in their growth as children and young persons. Phil is an excellent teacher and relates so well with his students. He is personable, prompt and uses many different techniques to keep our grandkids engaged. We are so glad to have found such a quality piano teacher and mentor”
