Sugarbowl is one of those Garneau spots I find myself coming back to whenever I’m nearby. Free parking behind the building makes it easy, which is a relief in that area.

Their vibe is what keeps me interested. They run the Artist Program, which highlights local work each month, and it adds a nice creative touch to the place.

Also, their menu has plenty of variety, and after a few visits, I’ve grown especially fond of the spicy beef burger. It has a juicy patty with jalapenos and mushrooms, and the Tabasco honey lime mayo gives it a sweet and spicy kick.

Coffee is another strong point. They serve beans from Kaffa Coffee Company, and drinks like London Fog and chai latte are solid picks.

The only drawback is brunch. No reservations on weekends or holidays, and groups are capped at six, so waits are common.

Pros

  • Free parking
  • Has breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner menus
  • Showcases local talent through monthly Artist Program
  • Specialty coffee options
  • Has a happy hour promo

Cons

  • No reservations for brunch on weekends or holidays
  • Groups limited to 6 during weekend and holiday brunches
  • Expect wait during peak brunch time

Such a quaint brunch spot!

“Such a quaint brunch spot! Their eggs benedict were so good with sweet cornbread and the burrito was nice and cheesy. The staff all seem happy to be there and greet you with a smile. I loved their chai, highly recommend!

It’s cheap, affordable and delicious

“A local gem, service and food both on par! It’s cheap, affordable and delicious. I ordered bison chili and paired it with a Merlot wine. My boyfriend had Mac and cheese and an ipa beer. Both were amazing!”

I’ve been to Bianco a few times now, and it’s become one of those spots I recommend when friends ask about Italian in Edmonton. The best thing about them is that they do everything by hand, using organic flour that gives the food a rustic feel!

And out of all the dishes I’ve tried here, their Scaccia pizza is my personal favourite. It’s layered with roasted garlic, tomato, red onion, arugula, and ricotta. It’s rich but balanced, which is why I keep going back for it.

Their pasta lineup is solid too, with classics like bolognese and more adventurous plates like squid ink linguine. I also like their daily bubbles and the Aperitivo Afternoons, which make it easy to drop in for a drink and a snack.

Unfortunately, reservations can be tricky, especially for bigger groups, and I’ve heard of cancellations happening at the last minute.

Pros

  • Handmade pasta and pizza with organic flour
  • Daily rotating bubbles from 29 sparkling wines
  • Aperitivo Afternoons with light bites and drinks
  • Catering available for office lunches and events

Cons

  • Online reservations don’t work for groups of 5 or more
  • Occasional last-minute reservation cancellations

The food was really good here

“The food was really good here. Very high quality, extremely flavourful, and good portion sizes. The atmosphere was really really nice, and the service was top notch. I had the tagliatelle con Prosciutto al Limone and it was really really good. The prosciutto had a really strong cured meat and salty taste, it was excellent when paired with the creamy pasta. Would definitely have this again”

Rge Rd has become one of my go-to spots whenever I want a proper dinner. They opened back in 2013 in Westmount, and their whole thing is cooking with what Alberta farms provide.

You notice right away how much they lean on wood fire and whole animal butchery, which gives the food a depth that feels different from the usual.

The dish I keep coming back for is their dry-aged beef steak with potato gnocchi. It comes with leek, mushroom, smoked brisket ragout, and red wine jus. It’s definitely one of the highlights of their menu.

They also serve bison, elk, and salmon, and during the week, you can grab sandwiches or charcuterie to go. Their farm dinners are another highlight, letting you eat right at the source.

Sadly, service can be slow, and they’re only open for dinner, but the food makes up for it.

Pros

  • Strong farm-to-table focus
  • Uses wood fire cooking
  • Whole animal butchery with adventurous cuts
  • Private dining available
  • Offers grab-and-go sandwiches and charcuterie
  • Regularly hosts farm dinners

Cons

  • Service can be slow at times
  • Only open for dinner

This restaurant was the highlight of my visit and was so incredibly delicious

“This restaurant was the highlight of my visit and was so incredibly delicious. True farm to table with outstanding quality. Staff is very friendly, giving excellent service. Truly unique and creative dishes, including my new fav Alpine cheese ice cream. Elk was the best I have ever tasted. An original place with a dedicated team and warm environment.”

There are times when my budget feels too tight to eat wherever I want, which is why I appreciate places like The Old Spaghetti Factory.

They have two locations in Edmonton, and both are decorated with stained glass, antique lights, and vintage-looking artifacts that give them a cozy atmosphere instead of something flashy.

I like how every entrée comes as a full meal with bread and butter, soup, ice cream, and coffee, which makes it feel like good value. My favourite dish so far is their lasagna.

It has a rich meat sauce and plenty of mozzarella, which always hits the spot!1 I also like that they cater to different diets with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free menus.

The downside is that the popularity of their set meals can slow service on busy days. They sometimes run out of ingredients, too, which means certain dishes are unavailable before closing.

Pros

  • 2 locations in Edmonton
  • Full meal included with every entrée
  • Cozy atmosphere with stained glass, antique lights, and vintage decor
  • Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free menus available
  • Regular promotions like happy hour and lunch specials
  • Competitive prices

Cons

  • Service can be slow during busy times
  • Some menu items occasionally unavailable

This place is phenomenal

“This place is phenomenal, the food is amazing and filling, with tons of flavour and delight. The place is gorgeous, filled with stained glass, paintings, nice lamps and very clean. If you want a pasta dish that’s filling and has flavour, come to the old spaghetti factory. The service is great and the waiters are nice. Everything is reasonably priced as an example the drinks here are $5-7 and compared to other restaurants that is an amazing offer. When you order it comes with a minestrone soup or a fresh salad and a free drink. At the end you can get either a vanilla ice cream or a spumoni ice cream. This place 100/10”

-Craig Malone, Google Reviews

The lasagna was very good!

“We love the lunch set here, it includes a soup or salad, sourdough bread, a main dish, ice cream and a coffee or tea. It’s so satisfying even though the size of the main is smaller than a regular order. For the soup, you can upgrade to other soups like clam chowder. The lasagna was very good! And the ice cream was okay too.”

5. Bernadette’s

bernadette-s

Menu options: Seasonal dishes like raw elk, grilled rapini, and bison steak

Business hours: 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM (WED-SUN)

Bernadette’s is probably one of my top picks if we’re talking about unique dishes and atmosphere. It always feels like a treat to dine here, especially with their iconic hand-painted mural by bb.iskwew that gives the space so much character!

The menu changes often since they focus on local and wild produce, so you never quite know what will show up, but that unpredictability is part of the fun.

My last visit was the most memorable because of the raw elk with fried capers, shallots, and blueberries. It had this earthy yet slightly sweet flavour that really stuck with me.

They also serve Indigenous sharing plates that make the whole experience feel communal, plus a happy hour menu if you want something lighter.

The food is creative and thoughtful, though I’ll admit the portions are on the smaller side and the prices are higher than average.

Pros

  • Cozy, intimate atmosphere with mural by bb.iskwew
  • Indigenous fine dining concept
  • Menu changes often with local seasonal produce
  • Offers Indigenous sharing plates
  • Happy hour menu with lighter bites and drinks

Cons

  • Above-average prices
  • Portions can feel small and not fully satisfying

One of the best meals I’ve had in Edmonton

“One of the best meals I’ve had in Edmonton. The bison cheeks & dumplings was the star of the meal, followed closely by the brisket on bannock. Dessert was perfect. My only suggestion is I wish they would update the menu on their website as it changes.”

-Bonnie, Google Reviews

It is quite possibly the best meal I’ve had

“My partner and I came here for the set menu in May and we were absolutely blown away. It is quite possibly the best meal I’ve had. The wine pairings were perfectly suited to each dish, which was teeming with flavour, colour, and a medley of different textures. It was a mouthwatering food experience! If you’re considering whether to splurge on the set menu, you will not regret it.”
